The story of our books: the Windrush Generation

Interpretations below were written by the Portico Library volunteers as part of Bookends and Beginnings: Stories from our collections by our volunteers exhibition.

2023 sees the 75th anniversary of the HMT Empire Windrush arriving in Britain on 22 June 1948. Portico Trustee and Chair of the Public Programme Committee Carol Ann Whitehead FRSA CMgr CCMI was joined by fellow Portico Trustee Kevin Dalton-Johnson, teacher, international artist and curator and equalities warrior, trainer and public speaker Elizabeth Cameron, Chair, #GMRacePanel in the Portico Library to discuss being the British born children of the Windrush Generation.

Their discussion includes some upsetting accounts of racism and racist violence.
