The Portico Collection

The Portico Library’s collection of over 25,000 mostly 19th-century books includes many first editions and represents the interests of Manchester’s most influential Georgian and Victorian people.

Our books and archives offer a tangible insight into the culture of Industrial Revolution Manchester at the height of the colonial era, and cover a wealth of subjects with a particularly strong focus on travel, biography, fiction, science, poetry, history, and maps.

This 19th century collection was assembled following a racist, sexist and ableist system of cultural hierarchies and some of the books reflect the prejudices of the historical era. We have a smaller collection of modern and contemporary books which enhance the core collection by offering alternative perspectives and reflect changing attitudes and interests.

We are working to address the harmful legacies in our collections. We ask for your help in identifying inaccuracies or content that causes harm. We welcome your suggestions and feedback, which can be sent to collections@theportico.org.uk.
