Bookbinding: Making an A5 Travel Journal - POSTPONED

Single sheets have been bound together with adhesive since Victorian times through to the modern paperback . . . and they don’t have to fall apart! It’s even called ‘perfect binding’ in the trade. In this workshop, with local bookbinder Barry Clark, you will make a perfect bound book, with coloured end-papers, strengthened linen cloth covers, with a pocket inside the rear cover for tickets and ephemera, all held together with an elasticated closure. A great journal, home or away. All materials and tools will be provided. The fee includes the cost of materials, tea/coffee on arrival and a light lunch. This workshop is limited to 12 participants so early booking is advised.

Bookbinding: A crossed structure notebook - POSTPONED

In this workshop, with local bookbinder Barry Clark, you will make an A6 crossed structure notebook - a useful, non-adhesive binding developed by Carmencho Arregui. The text block is sewn directly onto the binding which could
 be card, leather or a number of other materials. Our notebook will have a hand-marbled paper for the front cover, with a textile book cloth for the rear. There are many variations possible using this structure, so by learning the essentials you will be able to experiment with further designs at home should you wish. All materials and tools will be provided. The fee includes the cost of materials, tea/coffee on arrival and a light lunch. This workshop is limited to 12 participants so early booking is advised.

An Introduction to Bookbinding - Sold out

In this one day workshop you will work with an experienced local bookbinder, Barry Clark, to create three books: a sewn pamphlet with a decorative dustwrapper, a Japanese stab binding, and a multi-section notebook with exposed decorative sewing. These three projects will introduce you to the essentials of all bookbinding: grain direction, folding and cutting paper, creating book sections, setting out sewing stations and different ways of sewing books. And you will have three hand-made books to take home! All materials and tools will be provided. The fee includes the cost of materials, tea/coffee on arrival and a light lunch. A bookbinding workshop with a difference!

(In partnership with the Society of Bookbinders, North West and North Wales Region)

Wednesday 16 October 2019, 10.15-4.00; tea/coffee on arrival from 10am for a prompt start at 10.15am

An opportunity to get creative making a variety of ingenious, fun and useful items. With tutor Barry Clark we will re-create the almost forgotten milkman’s Magic Wallet, the Map Fold (a way to present a whole page image in a small and attractive format), the Pop-Up invitation/greetings card for those special occasions or special people, and the Exploding Box (secrets to be revealed). A treat for yourself and an opportunity to make some unique Christmas gifts. All materials and tools will be provided. The fee includes the cost of materials, tea/coffee on arrival and a light lunch.
